20–35 minutes from most Miami-Dade locations via I-95 • 300+ VFR days/year • 12hrs/day, 7 days/week
Miami-Dade County's 2.7 million residents are just minutes from My Flight Time at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (KFXE). Located just north of the Miami-Dade/Broward border, KFXE provides a professional towered training environment without the restrictions and delays of training at Miami International Airport.
Miami-Dade pilots benefit from training at KFXE while still having easy access to Miami's Class B airspace for advanced training. KFXE's Class D environment is ideal for initial training, while Miami Approach provides the complex airspace experience airlines value. This combination is unique to the MFT location.
Complete programs: PPL ($11,900), IR ($11,800), CPL ($4,050–$11,100), CFI ($5,800), foreign license conversion ($17,500), time building from $60/hr. International pilot support available.
Miami-Dade County students usually start with the Private Pilot program, add an instrument rating, then move into the Commercial Pilot program or the Airline Pilot Program. Career-track pilots close the hour gap with time building at KFXE — every rate is listed on our pricing page, and the aircraft you will fly are on the fleet page.
Year-round VFR flying. South Florida's weather is the #1 reason pilots choose this region for training.
Most Miami-Dade addresses are twenty to thirty-five minutes from KFXE on I-95, the Turnpike or Federal Highway — closest from North Miami, Aventura, Miami Beach and Sunny Isles, longest from Kendall, Homestead and the far south of the county. Brightline from MiamiCentral to Fort Lauderdale plus a short rideshare is a genuinely practical alternative for students living downtown.
County-wide, our Miami-Dade students split roughly evenly between career-track full-timers and part-time weekend flyers. Full-time students run five days a week and typically move from zero hours to a Commercial certificate with instrument privileges inside a year, folding time building between checkrides. Part-time students protect one fixed weekday slot and one weekend slot, which is the minimum cadence we recommend for steady progress.
Training out of KFXE keeps initial lessons in a manageable Class D environment while Miami's Class B is a fifteen-minute flight away when you are ready for it. Miami-Dade students commonly work KOPF and KTMB into their cross-country planning, use the shoreline VFR corridor for pilotage, and take the Everglades practice areas for maneuvers. Pilots wanting international and over-water experience add a Bimini or Freeport leg, which is a short hop from Fort Lauderdale.
