What to Look For in a Time Building Program (Red Flags Included)

My Flight Time TeamPublished · Updated 3 min read

A good time building program has (1) a company-owned fleet of 8+ aircraft, (2) in-house 24/7 maintenance, (3) published wet or dry rates with no hidden fees, (4) real hours of daily availability (10+ per day), (5) a clear no-show and weather cancellation policy, (6) insurance that covers you as renter-PIC without a $2,000+ deductible, (7) verifiable reviews across three platforms, (8) transparent aircraft availability (real-time schedule), (9) an office you can visit, and (10) staff who answer the phone. Red flags: unpublished pricing, single-aircraft outfits, and contractor maintenance.

Why Does Program Choice Matter So Much?

A 1,250-hour time-building block costs $75,000–$140,000 and takes 8–14 months. If your program has one plane and it goes down for 3 weeks of unscheduled maintenance, that's a $10,000 hit to your schedule and possibly your regional airline interview date. The right program is one that runs even when things go wrong.

    What Fleet Size Is Enough?

Aim for a school that operates at least 6–8 aircraft in the class you're building (singles or twins). At our Fort Lauderdale base we operate multiple Cessna 152s, 172s, Piper Archers, and a Beechcraft Duchess — meaning any single aircraft in maintenance never stops your schedule. Single-aircraft outfits look cheap on paper and grind to a halt on the first squawk.

    In-House vs. Contract Maintenance?

In-house 24/7 maintenance is the single biggest reliability factor. A contracted MRO shop works 8-hour days and prioritizes their own paying customers. Our team works around the clock — a squawk on a Tuesday night is fixed by Wednesday morning. Schools relying on third-party shops routinely see 5–15 day maintenance delays that eat into your training.

    Are Rates Published or Quote-Only?

Reputable programs publish per-hour rates. Ours are on our pricing page — $60/hr wet C152, $115/hr wet C172, $160/hr wet Duchess. If a school won't quote you a wet rate over the phone or email, walk away — hidden fees are the norm at outfits that hide pricing.

What Are the Real Availability Hours?

Some programs advertise '7 days a week' but only accept bookings 9 AM–5 PM. If you can only fly during peak weather thunderstorm hours (May–September afternoons in Florida), your monthly hours drop 40%. Our program runs 12 hours a day, 5 AM–10 PM — you can dodge afternoon storms by flying pre-sunrise and post-sunset.

What Are Cancellation and No-Show Policies?

Weather cancellations should be free. Mechanical cancellations should be free and rebook priority. No-shows should be reasonable — $50–$100, not a full aircraft rental charge. Ask before signing.

    What's Your Insurance Exposure?

Most schools carry hull and liability insurance and pass a $1,000–$2,500 renter deductible to you. Some pass higher deductibles ($5,000–$10,000) that would gut your training budget on any incident. Ask for the certificate of insurance and verify your exposure before you fly.

    How Do You Verify Reputation?

    • Google reviews with 100+ ratings and 4.5+ average
    • Reddit r/flying threads mentioning the school by name (search 6–24 months back)
    • AOPA member reviews if available
    • In-person visit — the ramp tells you everything

Can You See Real-Time Aircraft Availability?

Modern schools use Flight Schedule Pro, ETA, or similar. You should be able to log in and see next-week availability before you commit. Schools that only book by phone are hiding utilization or fleet condition.

Red Flags to Walk Away From

    • Requires 100% payment upfront with no refund clause
    • Only 1–2 aircraft total
    • Rates 'available on request' or wildly inconsistent between quotes
    • No physical office you can visit
    • Instructors change every 2 weeks (high turnover = deeper problems)
    • Reviews mention frequent maintenance downtime
    • No published insurance coverage or deductibles
