The Aeronautical Experience in Detail
Under 14 CFR 61.129 the single-engine Commercial certificate requires 250 hours total time, including 100 hours in powered aircraft, 100 hours of pilot-in-command time, 50 hours of cross-country flying, 20 hours of training on the commercial areas of operation, and 10 hours of solo or performing-the-duties flight. Within those figures sit a long cross-country of at least 300 nautical miles with landings at three points, a night cross-country of over 100 nautical miles, and 10 takeoffs and landings at night at a towered airport.
Ten of the training hours must be in a complex or technically advanced aircraft, and ten must be instrument training. Building a plan around these specifics — rather than the 250-hour headline — is what keeps a Commercial timeline honest.
Commercial Maneuvers and the Practical Test
The Commercial checkride tests precision rather than new skills. Chandelles, lazy eights, steep spirals, eights-on-pylons, power-off 180-degree accuracy landings and short and soft field work all have tight tolerances, and examiners in this region reliably combine them with realistic scenario-based decision-making and airspace work.
The oral portion focuses on commercial privileges and limitations, aircraft systems and performance, and the regulations governing carrying persons or property for compensation. Candidates who can explain what they may and may not legally be paid to do tend to have a noticeably smoother oral.
What the Certificate Lets You Do
A Commercial certificate allows you to be compensated for flying, within the limits of the operation and the regulations that govern it. In practice, most new Commercial pilots move into flight instruction, banner towing, aerial survey, pipeline patrol, skydive operations or Part 135 work as hours allow.
